Santa Claus
(Sattelmeier 2014 Daylily)
Seedling 09-11-36F: Fabulous Black Pearl (Salter, 2008)x Ship Wrecked Cove (Salter, 2007)
Height 26in (66cm), bloom 5in (12.7cm), Petals 2.5"W x 3"L, Sepals 1.5"W x 2.75"L, season M, Rebloom, Semi-Evergreen, Tetraploid, 15 buds, 3 way branching.
Santa Claus was a surprise out of 51 seedlings of this cross with this pronounced red color, not the dark purple eye and edge of the others. This flower can be as large as 5.5" depending if the sepals do not fold. The petals have an intense lip red color eye/edge including a bonus of a nice petal substance. The massive eye measures over 3.0in. an diameter. The petal continues with a beautiful contrasting extremely light pale gold which turns during the day to a creamy white and is accented with a large immense ruffled edge (1/4in to 3/8in) of the same lip red color completing the pleasing contrast. The sepals are unique as they can be slight cupped and stand straight out or they can have slight ruffles and fold back.
Note: The backside of the flower is an exception from most other daylilies. The sepals back side vein lines show the lighter lip color from the outside edge blending into a lighter blending pink and then finishing off the center vein lines with light pale gold. On the backside, the petals ruffled dark edge is transferred from the front with the intense lip red color on the edges with the very light cream through the whole petal illuminating on the backside. Very attractive and definitely three dimensional viewing. Good for planting on a hill, berm or where both sides of the flower can be seen.
